Prime Minister Mark Carney criticized Stelco’s leadership after the company announced it will indefinitely idle its cold-rolled and coated operations at its Hamilton Works plant. “Our thoughts are with the workers and the families who have been betrayed by the company,” Carney told reporters, pointing to U.S. tariffs as a factor in the situation. “This situation is caused by the U.S. tariffs and the CEO applauded President Trump for putting those tariffs on,” he said. The shutdown is expected to begin Oct. 9, according to Ron Wells, president of United Steelworkers Local 1005. About 350 workers at the Hamilton plant are expected to be laid off. Wells said the total number of layoffs could reach 500 when workers at Stelco’s Lake Erie Works in Nanticoke, Ont., are included. Stelco has also said up to 500 workers could be affected. The announcement leaves hundreds of steelworkers and their families facing an uncertain future as the company winds down the affected operations.
