@jess_happy_smallholding: Do we make any money from our hens? Costs 🌱 £57 per month on food 🌱 £3 per month on bedding 🌱 Total cost of £60 Income 🌱 Our 11 hens lay 8 eggs per day on average including winter (they lay more in the summer and less in the winter) 🌱 That’s 243 eggs per month 🌱 We sell half a dozen eggs for £2 🌱 That’s £81 per month So in a month the hens cover their costs with £21 net profit. What about set up costs? The fencing was about £1000 and the hen house was pretty much free because we built it out of wood we salvaged from another project. So it’s going to take 48 months or 4 years until we break even. So eventually we’ll recoup our costs, but it’s going to take a while 😅 #selfsufficient #gyo #growyourown #growyourownfood #homestead #smallholding #garden #lovegardening #kitchengarden #veggarden #plants #igrewthis #ediblegarden #gardendesign #spreadsheets #chickens
What is the lifespan of a hen? If it dies within 4 years that’s another cost…

We have 25 chickens now and more being warmed in the incubator. Cost us 24€ feed and bedding. Built our fencing with pallets and coop the same. Free ranging. My eggs are the best ever. ❤️🇪🇸

What do you feed them? Our 6 chickens and 4 ducks cost £20 a month and my mom sells a few eggs which covers the cost each month and we have more than enough eggs ourselves
