I thought it was another pointless trick. I was sitting in a neurologist's office for the third time that month. My lower back wouldn't stop hurting, my neck felt stiff, and my jaw was so tight my teeth were grinding at night. I had already been prescribed massage, acupuncture, and pills. 'Squeeze your thighs 20 times. Only while lying down.' I laughed. The doctor didn't smile. 'Do it now. Right here on the table. Then we'll talk.' So I lay down and started squeezing. One... two... three... Around the tenth squeeze I felt something strange. Warmth started in my hips and moved upward like a wave. By the twentieth, my body felt heavy against the table. My lower back started to relax. The jaw I had been clenching for years suddenly loosened on its own. Like someone flipped a switch and turned the tension off inside my body. I just lay there thinking... is this some kind of hypnosis? 'Your thigh is the largest muscle group in the body,' the doctor said. 'When you squeeze it while lying down, blood moves toward the brain without fighting gravity. The brain receives a signal – there is no danger. It can relax.' Here's what's happening inside. Lying on your back is one of the few positions where the spine can truly rest. When you sit, pressure on the lower back increases. When you stand, joints stay tense. But when you lie down, the body finally feels safe. Most people live with chronically tight hamstrings. These muscles shorten from long hours of sitting. They pull on the pelvis. The pelvis pulls on the lower back. The lower back pulls on the neck. A domino effect we often call 'getting older.' But the truth is simpler. The muscles just forgot how to relax. Twenty squeezes can reset that pattern. No massage therapists. No expensive treatments. For years the West joked about it – until research started showing similar results. But sometimes all the body needs is to lie down and squeeze the thighs. Lie on your back. Squeeze your thighs 20 times. Your body just received a signal to live. #advice
