@ownyourbosshq: Untrained managers often avoid written follow-ups because they’re worried it feels formal or confrontational. In reality, following up conversations in writing protects everyone and creates clarity, fairness and confidence. If you’re managing people and want to avoid misunderstandings and escalation, this skill matters.

I thought this was the best thing to do but HR recently told me not to for an employee who we know is about to lodge a formal complaint me to avoid emails being used against me. I just thought I should always send emails to be clear on discussions

Should you be threatened with a warning at a return to work meeting when you have been off with stress ?

as a manager subjected to an investigation at present.... this is actually invaluable. when s complaint is made you are effectively guilty until proven innocent, no matter how ridiculous the claims against you. with one specific person for this reason alone I made sure all communication was through teams or followed up with an email. you'd be surprised the details they want when trying to screw you over. thankfully I can disprove it all.... and even that's a huge stress

I’ve told all my kids to secretly record all meetings then send a follow up to the manager. They use the recording for accuracy. Insist this is added to your file. The manager knows their position then.
