Blue Lake Trail is one of the most popular hikes along the North Cascades Highway in Washington and is a great option if you’re looking for a relatively easy hike with a big payoff. The trail is 4.8 miles round trip with about 1,000 feet of elevation gain, ending at a stunning alpine lake surrounded by rugged peaks. We arrived at the trailhead around 7:45 a.m., and there were only about five parking spots left. I’d definitely recommend getting an early start, especially on weekends. It was nice and cool in the morning, making for a really comfortable hike. The trail is mostly shaded, with a very gradual uphill grade, so it’s an enjoyable climb and an even easier walk back since it’s an out-and-back trail. After two days of tackling some of the North Cascades’ harder hikes, this felt like the perfect “recovery” hike. The trail was in great shape overall. We only encountered a few small muddy sections and just one small patch of lingering snow. Bird activity was incredible throughout the hike—we saw and heard birds almost the entire way. Once you reach Blue Lake, be prepared for lots of mosquitoes and other bugs, so definitely bring bug spray. It’s a beautiful place to spend some time, so I’d also recommend packing snacks and a towel if you want to relax by the water or take a cold swim. We left the trailhead around noon, and by then the parking lot was completely full, with about 10 cars lined up along the highway. It had also warmed up quite a bit, so bringing layers was definitely the right call. Stats: We hiked 4.83 miles with a moving time of 2 hours, 16 minutes. On your way back toward Mazama or Winthrop, make a quick stop at the Washington Pass Overlook just a few miles down the road. It’s one of the most iconic viewpoints in the North Cascades and well worth adding to your day. #northcascades #washington #Hiking #bluelake #bluelaketrail
