Beyond the Tracks By Michael Hanson The greatest inspiration behind my novel, Beyond the Tracks, is my wife. My wife lives with Limb-Girdle Muscular Dystrophy, a progressive condition that has taken away her ability to move independently. She uses a power wheelchair and depends on my help with everyday activities, including getting out of bed, transferring, bathing, and dressing. As her husband and caregiver, I see what that loss of independence means. I wish I could give her back the ability to do the simple things she misses. I cannot change her condition, but I can stand beside her, listen, help, and advocate for her. Our life is not just about disability. We laugh, love, disagree, raise our family, and make memories. My wife has her own humor, opinions, feelings, and dreams. She is not someone to be pitied or treated as an inspirational lesson. She is the woman I love. That is what I wanted readers to understand through Jasper Callahan. A disability may change someone’s daily life, but it does not erase their personality, their worth, or their future. Beyond the Tracks follows Jasper, a curious 15-year-old growing up in Franklin, New Jersey. He loves exploring old places, photographing the town’s historic mining properties, and helping at his family’s vintage business, Signature Vintage. While photographing an abandoned mansion, Jasper falls through a deteriorating floor and sustains a permanent spinal cord injury. He must adjust to life using a manual wheelchair, with all the practical and emotional challenges that brings. I did not want to give Jasper a miraculous recovery. I wanted him to remain a believable teenager: sometimes frustrated or afraid, but also curious, stubborn, funny, and capable of friendship and joy. Because my wife’s muscular dystrophy is different from a spinal cord injury, I researched spinal cord injuries, rehabilitation, and wheelchair use to portray Jasper’s experience as respectfully and accurately as I could. The novel also follows a mystery. Jasper discovers an old journal tied to Franklin’s mining history and an unexplained phenomenon that connects forgotten objects with people who need to reconnect with part of their past. A pocket watch, a stuffed raccoon, a lunchbox, and a radio hold stories of love, loss, and memories that still matter. Jasper’s friendship with Tyler Morgan, a teenager with a severe stutter, adds another story of acceptance and understanding. Other parts of the book come from my own life. I grew up in Franklin, and many of the streets, buildings, and forgotten places Jasper explores are places I explored myself. Signature Vintage is my real business, which I still operate through eBay. Handling objects from estate sales and auctions has often made me wonder who owned them, what they meant, and why they were left behind. Those questions inspired the phenomenon. But my wife is the heart of this book. Beyond the Tracks is about seeing the person beyond the disability, recognizing the meaning behind ordinary objects, and remembering that every life holds stories worth telling. Some stories are never truly lost. Beyond the Tracks by Michael Hanson is available on Amazon. https://a.co/d/0igkxZ1q #amazonkdp #ComingOfAge #mysterybooks #wheelchair #BookTok
