C5 — Belong to someone else Jennie Kim had a new routine. Every morning, she arrived at the office earlier than usual, reviewed the latest project documents, and checked the schedule for the day's meetings. Her colleagues noticed. Her assistant noticed. And, unfortunately for Jennie, so did her two closest friends. "You're going to that meeting again?" Jisoo asked one morning, standing beside Jennie's desk with a cup of coffee in her hand. Jennie didn't look up from the plans. "Yes." "Isn't that the third meeting you've attended this week?" "Fourth." Jisoo slowly lowered her coffee. "You're not helping your case." "What case?" "The case that you're absolutely not trying to find excuses to see Lisa Lee." Jennie's pen stopped moving. She lifted her eyes. "Can you stop saying her name like that?" "Like what?" "Like you know something." "I do know something." Jisoo pulled a chair closer and sat down. "I know you suddenly care about every little detail of this project. I know you keep asking questions that could easily be answered in an email. And I know you've started showing up at the construction office even when the project director is perfectly capable of handling things." Jennie sighed. "Maybe I'm just taking my responsibilities seriously." "Jennie." "What?" Jisoo gave her a pointed look. "Please don't insult my intelligence. We've been friends for years." Jennie turned back to her documents. She had no intention of admitting that Jisoo was right. All perfectly reasonable explanations. Except that none of them explained why Jennie could recognize Lisa's footsteps outside a conference room. Or why she always noticed when Lisa entered a room, even when she was in the middle of a conversation. Or why the smallest things Lisa did could occupy Jennie's thoughts for the rest of the day. The way she tucked her hair behind her ear while studying a drawing. The way she listened carefully before answering a question. The way she never raised her voice, even when someone challenged her work. Jennie had spent years learning how to manage a hotel empire. Apparently, she had learned absolutely nothing about managing her own heart. "I'm just doing my job," Jennie repeated. Jisoo shook her head. "Fine. Do your job. But remember something." Jennie glanced at her. "What?" "You can't force someone to give you another chance just because you're finally ready to explain yourself." Jennie's expression changed. "I know that." "Do you?" "Yes, Jisoo." Jisoo studied her for a moment before standing. "Then I hope you really mean it." She walked toward the door, then paused. "And Jennie?" "What now?" "Try to remember that Lisa isn't the only person with feelings in this situation. Whatever you're hoping to get from her, she might not be ready to give it to you." The door closed behind her. Jennie stared at it for a long time. She knew her friend was right. That was what made it so difficult. Over the following days, Jennie found more opportunities to speak with Lisa. Lisa answered every question. Always politely. Always professionally. Never once did she give Jennie more than the situation required. Jennie would nod. Lisa would smile politely. And then Lisa would turn to someone else. It was maddening. Not because Lisa was being rude. She wasn't. She was courteous, attentive, and remarkably patient. She treated Jennie exactly as she treated every other client. That was the problem. There was no trace of their past in Lisa's behavior. No lingering glances. No awkward pauses. No indication that Jennie had once been the person she called before anyone else. Jennie sometimes wondered whether Lisa had rehearsed this indifference before returning to Seoul. Had she prepared herself to see Jennie again? Had she imagined what she would say? Or had she simply moved on so completely that there was nothing left to prepare for? One afternoon, Jennie found herself standing beside Lisa in the conference room while they reviewed the proposed layout for the hotel's main restaurant. Lisa pointed toward a section of the drawing. ⬇️⬇️⬇️
