Morning nausea that is not from pregnancy is almost always blood sugar or cortisol. Both are testable. Both are fixable. But persistent nausea deserves a proper medical workup first. DM me LABS and I'll send you my free guide on the markers I run with every client because if your morning nausea is a blood sugar or cortisol story, it shows up on labs. First, if you have persistent morning nausea, please get a proper medical evaluation to rule out gastrointestinal causes, medications, thyroid dysfunction, and other conditions that require investigation. But if your workup has come back clean and you are still nauseous every morning, here is what is often happening. Blood sugar. If you have not eaten since the night before, your blood sugar may be dropping overnight. By morning it is low enough to trigger nausea, your body's signal that fuel levels are critically low. This is particularly common in women with blood sugar instability or insulin resistance, where glucose regulation is already compromised. Eating protein and fat within 30 minutes of waking often resolves this completely. Cortisol. The cortisol awakening response, the natural spike in cortisol in the first 30-45 minutes after waking, can cause nausea in women with dysregulated cortisol patterns. If your cortisol spikes too high or too fast in the morning, the nausea can be significant. This is also why skipping breakfast and drinking coffee on an empty stomach makes morning nausea worse, caffeine amplifies the cortisol spike. Low stomach acid. Chronic stress depletes stomach acid production. Waking up with low stomach acid and an empty stomach can cause the gastric acid that is present to create nausea without food to buffer it. If your morning nausea gets better when you eat something small and protein-forward within 30 minutes of waking, that is a blood sugar and cortisol clue worth investigating.
