@nourishingapothecary: Endometriosis is not just about how much visible disease is there. One of the most important things to understand is that the severity of your symptoms does not always match the amount of endometriosis found. Some women can have extensive disease and surprisingly few symptoms. Others can have relatively small amounts of visible endometriosis and experience debilitating pain, bowel symptoms, fatigue and major disruption to everyday life. That is why, in clinic, I am not only asking “how much endometriosis do you have?” I am looking at the whole picture. Inflammation. Immune activity. Hormonal influences. Pelvic floor dysfunction. Gastrointestinal symptoms. Histamine related symptoms. Nervous system sensitisation. Nutrient status. Sleep. Stress. Pain processing. And the individual pattern of disease. That does not mean these things “cause” all endometriosis symptoms, and it does not mean we ignore the lesions themselves. It means endometriosis is complex. This is also why I believe strongly in collaborative care. Your gynaecologist and endometriosis specialist have an incredibly important role, particularly when imaging, medical management or surgery is needed. But there can also be a role for naturopathic care alongside that treatment to support the broader physiological picture. I am also very pleased to see increasing use of specialist deep endometriosis ultrasound, because in the right hands it can sometimes help identify deep disease, endometriomas, adhesions and reduced organ mobility before surgery and help guide surgical planning. It is not perfect, and a normal scan does not completely rule out endometriosis, but it can be an incredibly useful part of assessment. The goal should never be surgery versus naturopathy. For many women, the best care is multidisciplinary. At Nourishing Apothecary, Mel specialises in endometriosis and complex women’s health and works with women Australia wide via Zoom. @rakobe :
I just had that scan and it showed deep endo right where my worst pain is. Helped me feel more confident to go ahead with surgery. My doctor works with the ultrasound people to show them what he finds in the surgery so they keep getting better and better at being able to read the ultrasounds.

This!!!! 👏🏻👏🏻 thank you for making noise on endo. I’m in hospital right now with a ketamine infusion running for the pain. I’ve never seen a naturopath, but this makes so much sense
