@paindustrialhistory: Around Windber, Pennsylvania, families grew up in places with no names, just mine numbers. The Berwind-White Coal Mining Company built Windber in 1897 on the Somerset and Cambria county line and named it by flipping Berwind around. Its Eureka mines were numbered 30 through 42, and the company houses around each mine went by the number. People near Mine 40 just called home 40. A 1911 federal report found no indoor plumbing at Mine 35 and most families taking in boarders to make the rent. Company mining ended in 1962, but Mine 37, Mine 40 and Mine 42 are still there. Which number was your family's? Follow for the next town file. Photos: Mine 40 Historic District houses by Magicpiano / Wikimedia Commons, CC BY-SA 4.0. cause the company owns the house, worker pays with their check. Company store gets everything else. It was like a mini monopoly. They basically got their money back.
