@vanessameyersweden: Complexity science and the Cynefin framework help explain what type of work intrapreneurs focus on. Most of what the hierarchy handles is the complicated work: the known unknowns that are discoverable through analysis. For complicated work, experts primarily use deductive reasoning to analyse the problem, plan a solution and execute it. The management mode is to sense-analyse-respond. What the network of intrapreneurs explores is complex work: the unknowns are unknown, and cause and effect only become coherent in hindsight. The answers only appear as you act. So the volunteers reason inductively and abductively, letting patterns emerge and making their best guess at what explains them. They probe-sense-respond. That’s why tools built for complicated problems kill the exploration of complex ones. They ask people to predict the outcome of something that can’t be predicted yet.
