This is how billionaires should spend their money. Funding art

Even if Laika can financially recover, their consistent flops set the precedence that stop motion doesn’t make money. Meaning other companies won’t embrace stop motion. Many stop motion animators dislike laika for this reason.

1,000 artists for 16 years of work??? Yeah, I’m seated. This kind of artistry deserves our support especially when AI is pushing human creativity aside.

the context :
the conversation about Laika is so weird to me as someone who lives in the town their studio is in. yeah, it's a nepo baby situation, but that fallback is what allows the studio to take the time and hire GREAT artists to make beautiful work.

These films are very loved as cult classics. They carry a loyal near obsessive fanbase that spends money on merch and home media, and goes to see re releases (like Coralines 15 year re releases recently). They make a bit of money long term after theaters from that, people love Laika and spend money on their stuff because it's so unique in the modern era.

Anti AI stance and a thousand artists won me, I might actually see it even though it doesn’t otherwise seem like my cup of tea

Seen it opening day at the first showing in our local cinema. Personally I really enjoyed the film. It's amazing to look at, I enjoyed the story, which in my opinion gave Lord of the Rings vibes, and I was not prepared for how the movie opened. This is the type of nepo project we need to protect at all costs.

I just watched it, and it’s a cinematic masterpiece! Beautiful, gorgeous and breathtaking, at times I forgot it was stop motion, you can see the love they put into this. Story was very good and the characters likable, I definitely recommend it! Please go watch, we need to show them we want more of this and not AI slop! Movie-9.7/10
