@mumsbalance: i read the report so you don't have to 📄 between 2012 and 2023, the typical White British household got wealthier. so did the typical Indian household. but the typical Pakistani household's wealth almost halved. the report found two gaps: 1️⃣ how fast wealth grows, which mostly comes down to income. this is the part we can change. 2️⃣ how much wealth families already have, built up over generations. this is the one that's harder to close. and this is all happening during the great wealth transfer, when some people are about to receive the biggest inheritances in history. for a lot of first gens, it's the opposite. we're not inheriting, we're the ones supporting our parents. i can see inequality growing around me. but here, i'm focusing on what's within my control. i want my children to start the race a little further forward than we did. that's why i care about this so much. source: Karagiannaki, E. As someone in wealth management, I've noticed our people don't want to focus on investments and long-term savings. They want quick money with minimal effort and waste it on materialistic things

As a Pakistani family we give a lot of money to charity and give a lot of money to family back home. We also spend money like there’s no tomorrow. Our funerals cost us about £10,000 just to feed and pay for the afterlife of deceased in charity, we spend more on weddings than anyone else (£50-£60k per wedding bride and groom side combined Mehndis, walima, barath cloths etc etc), we perform pilgrimages to Hajj/Umrah which cost us £10k per person (usually 3-4 family members travel together). And there’s much more.

I would say number of kids. Kids are super expensive. Both Indians and white British normally only have one or two kids.

all the daughters in laws want to live separately from the joint family the sacrifice being that you can't save or accumulate wealth like you could when sharing the expenses

I think the stats are wrong as most pakistanis work self employed or cash from employers which is usually under reported. There is a parallel economy where many operate without hmrc reporting.

This is fake news, it doesn’t take into account the hidden gold and plots and properties back home and money sent through unofficial means, the numbers are heavily skewed , if you want to really go deep into it look into remittances and gold and you’ll see the full picture

family size/ number of children is a huge factor. it's one of the primary reasons why, back in the old country, Pakistani living standards have fallen so far behind Indian & Bangladeshi living standards over the past few decades, having started so far ahead.
