it's a diagnostic assessment not just a scan of the fault codes. the labour is for the time to fault find which will include reading the codes. diagnostic codes are only used as a guide. e.g. eml code says MAF sensor issue. it could be a number of things causing the maf to be out of range. I think this fee is fair considering the equipment needed is expensive. the garage overheads are expensive. wages need paid. and the necessary training to be able to understand the code and find/confirm the issue.

Sounds like a BMW diagnostic, I had to tell bmw on my 2nd diagnostic what to do as they coudnt find my fault, was the gearbox reset I wanted

Best thing I ever did was carry an OBD in the car, I was about 300 miles from home when a "steering fault" appeared, but unfortunately the second you turn the car off its no longer just a fault but a full failure. I cleared it and the car is fine, had my mechanic look over it and he can't understand why the fault came up, everythings perfect....
