From the Vault: Forgotten Canadian History The Sniper Who Terrified the Enemy: The Story of Francis Pegahmagabow During the First World War, amidst the horrific trench warfare of Europe, one of the most effective and feared snipers on the Allied side was an Indigenous Canadian from the Parry Island First Band in Ontario named Francis Pegahmagabow. From the Wilderness to the Western Front: When Canada entered WWI in 1914, Pegahmagabow didn’t hesitate. Despite facing severe discrimination at home as an Indigenous man, he volunteered and was deployed overseas with the legendary 28th Battalion of the Canadian Expeditionary Force. Growing up hunting and trapping in the rugged Ontario bush, Pegahmagabow possessed exceptional stealth, patience, and marksmanship—skills that turned out to be deadly in the muddy, chaotic trenches of France and Belgium. The Ghost in the Trenches: Equipped with a standard Lee-Enfield rifle and a sharp eye, Pegahmagabow became an elite sniper and scout. He could lie motionless in No Man's Land for hours, enduring freezing rain, artillery fire, and starvation to gather intelligence or pick off enemy targets. His accomplishments on the battlefield were staggering: Officially, he is credited with 374 confirmed kills, making him one of the most successful snipers of the entire war. He captured an astounding 300 German prisoners single-handedly during various raids and scouting missions. He was so stealthy and lethal that German forces reportedly put a bounty on his head, desperately trying to eliminate the "ghost" who was decimating their lines. Surviving the Impossible: The war took a massive physical toll. Pegahmagabow was severely wounded in the leg by a sniper bullet at the Second Battle of Ypres, and later suffered from a near-fatal case of lung damage from poison gas. Yet, every time he recovered, he returned straight back to the front lines because he felt a deep duty to protect his fellow soldiers. For his unmatched bravery, he became one of only 39 Canadians in WWI to be awarded the Military Medal with two bars—meaning he was decorated for extreme valor three separate times. Legacy: When the war finally ended in 1918, Pegahmagabow returned to Canada as one of the most highly decorated Indigenous soldiers in Canadian history. Beyond his military record, he spent the rest of his life fighting relentlessly for Indigenous rights, self-determination, and the cultural preservation of his people, leaving a legacy of courage both on and off the battlefield.
