IMAGINE HOLDING A GOVERNMENT MEETING UNDERWATER JUST TO MAKE THE WORLD PAY ATTENTION. 😳 On October 17, 2009, Maldives President Mohamed Nasheed took an extraordinary step to raise awareness about climate change. Instead of meeting in a government office, he and his cabinet gathered about four meters beneath the Indian Ocean. Wearing scuba gear, Nasheed, Vice President Mohamed Waheed, and 11 cabinet ministers sat at desks on the seabed near Girifushi Island. Since they couldn’t speak underwater, they communicated using hand signals and writing boards. During the roughly 30-minute meeting, they signed a declaration called “SOS from the Frontline,” urging world leaders to take stronger action to reduce carbon emissions. But why go to such lengths? The Maldives is one of the world’s lowest-lying countries, leaving many of its islands vulnerable to rising sea levels that threaten homes and coastal communities. With a major UN climate summit approaching in Copenhagen, Nasheed wanted the world to understand what was at stake. It was more than an unusual photo opportunity. It was a powerful underwater message: for some nations, climate change isn’t a distant concern. It’s a threat to their future.
