Being known for keeping your word should be one of everyone's core values.

Hayatt :
The “nobody owes you anything” epidemic we’re in has bled into all facets of life. You owe people your word, you owe people basic decency and you ESPECIALLY owe your friends and loved ones courtesy and presence

My mom always taught me that whatever you rsvp’d to first is what you committed to. Unless it’s an emergency that doesn’t change.

My mom taught me to follow through on my commitments. You can’t cancel because you got a better offer, sometimes that’s just the way the cookie crumbles.

I solved this problem by not having friends [Heartwarming] my family goes to Disney, they do the cooking, cleaning and entertainment

Unless it is illness or a family emergency you get one shot with me. Once you commit I have zero tolerance for “better plans” people. They are off the list.

This is exactly why I stopped. I hosted Friendsgiving every year from 2015–2024, except 2020. I LOVE cooking and hosting. In 2024, my friend who usually helped was about to give birth, so another friend agreed to help me prep. We’d been planning the menu for weeks. She asked to bring her new boyfriend—…absolutely! Then his sister, of course, she’s welcome too!
Three days before, after she’d stopped responding to messages about the menu, she told me all three were canceling because his sister’s friend was having a party and they were going to that instead. So now I’d lost three guests AND the person who committed to helping me cook.
Other people canceled last minute, and one just didn’t show up. I usually hosted 15–18 people; that year I had about six. I would’ve happily planned dinner for six! It was being dropped because something “better” came along after all that planning, shopping, and effort. That was my last year hosting. This shit takes the joy right out of it.

It’s a lack of punishment for bailing. That’s the problem. They should be shamed and cut off.

I haaaate the last minute canceling! We will continue to host even when we only end up having a few people show up but MAN it hurts when people say yes and their “yes” is really a “I’ll probably say no later but don’t want to make you sad right now”

Hosting costs a lot for little reward imo. Guests aren’t even grateful or gracious anymore.

Yep and honestly I don’t consider people who do that my actual friends, they are really acquaintances. Also had a friend make a snide remark about my home not being as nice as hers, which it isn’t, but that was enough to put me off hosting.

I think it’s okay to tell them you are disappointed because you picked a date they said worked for them. I think holding people accountable will either grow the friendship or they weren’t kind enough to be your friend in the first place
