The ones who find their way home Every autumn, millions of monarch butterflies arrive in the forests of central Mexico after travelling thousands of kilometres from Canada and the United States. Their arrival coincides with Día de Muertos, when families gather to remember those who are no longer here. There's something remarkable about that journey. The butterflies arriving have never been to these forests before. Yet they find their way to the same wintering grounds as previous generations, following a route they have never travelled themselves. I photographed the first scene at dusk, beside an altar set up in the street. Marigolds, candles, photographs, food, and small offerings had been arranged for those who have died. Above it, a sign pointed uphill towards the forests where the butterflies spend the winter. For generations, the Purépecha people of Michoacán have associated the monarchs with the souls of the departed, returning around the beginning of November. The butterflies' orange wings echo the colour of cempasúchil, the marigolds used in Día de Muertos celebrations. A natural migration and a tradition of remembrance meet at the same time of year. The second photograph is from the trail through the forest, where a local guide leads his horse beneath the trees. The forests around the monarch sanctuary are closely tied to the ejidos, community-governed lands whose residents help protect the butterflies' winter habitat. Behind the migration is another kind of continuity: people who know these mountains, care for the land, and return to it year after year. Photography is often about trying to keep something from disappearing. But some things return year after year, whether we manage to capture them or not. Perhaps a photograph matters not because it keeps a moment forever, but because it gives us a reason to remember it. Raconteur Road Photographs, and the road between them. The longer story behind the project is at the link in bio. raconteur-road.com #diadelosmuertos #mexico_maravilloso #monarch #butterflies #natgeotravel #nomadict #travelphotography #exploretocreate #nomadict #documentary
