@byjaniceayers: New court documents reportedly reveal troubling details about what happened behind the scenes during the unsuccessful attempt to ex*cute Tennessee death row inmate Christa Pike. According to the reported filings, the IV team used approximately 10 needles and attempted to establish intravenous access at several locations on both of Pike's arms. The process reportedly continued for nearly an hour before the ex*cution was ultimately called off. Here's where things get interesting. These new allegations raise serious questions about the procedures used during l*thal injection, the qualifications and preparation of ex*cution personnel, and whether repeated unsuccessful attempts to establish IV access could constitute cruel and unusual punishment under the Eighth Amendment. Pike's case has already attracted significant attention because of her conviction in the 1995 m**der of 19-year-old Colleen Slemmer. While Pike's conviction remains in place, the reported details of the failed procedure raise a separate legal question about how the state carries out capital punishment.
To be honest, this is so sad. They should not be able to torture you, and then try again. They should get one chance. Now commute her sentence to life without parole. That is the humane thing to do IMO.
