@deadeye_outdoors: A deer can have a stomach full of food… and still starve. 🦌🌽 Sounds impossible until you understand what happens inside its digestive system. Deer rely on microbes in their rumen to break down plants and turn them into usable energy. A full belly only helps if that food supplies enough nutrition—and the digestive system can process it. When food stays scarce, a deer burns through body reserves. Prolonged low intake also reduces its rumen microbes, making recovery more complicated than simply finding a big meal. Then there’s a separate danger: a sudden grain feast. A large amount of starch in an unadapted rumen can disrupt fermentation and produce dangerous acid buildup. That’s rumen acidosis, and it is different from starvation—even though both can leave food inside the stomach. Before somebody says, “But deer eat corn in fields!”—yes, they do. Amount, previous diet, and body condition matter. A deer accustomed to corn is in a different situation from a starving deer suddenly finding a pile after weeks of scarcity. The takeaway? Supporting native browse and good winter cover before a crisis can do more good than an emergency feeding attempt. Contact your wildlife agency if you find deer that appear to be starving. A full stomach doesn’t always mean a fed deer. 👇 Had you heard of this before, or would you have assumed that deer just needed more food? #DeadeyeOutdoors #DeerFacts #WhitetailDeer #WildlifeEducation #HabitatManagement
