With all due respect, Papua New Guinea has its own experienced and qualified police officers who are capable of serving as Provincial Police Commanders. Why are we continuing to look overseas when we should be building confidence in our own people? Policing is not just about qualifications and years of experience. Culture, understanding our people, customary ways of resolving disputes, local mentality and community relationships all play a major role in maintaining law and order in PNG. Our country has hundreds of different languages and diverse cultural traditions. Understanding these realities is important when dealing with our communities. While foreign officers may bring valuable experience, our own officers also deserve a fair opportunity to lead their country. We have been an independent nation since 1975. Surely, one of our priorities should be developing our own leaders, investing in their training and giving qualified Papua New Guineans the opportunity to serve at the highest levels. There is nothing wrong with learning from other countries, but we must not overlook our own people in the process. Bring in expertise to strengthen our institutions, mentor our officers and build local capacity—not to make our own people feel that they are not good enough to lead their own country. PNG belongs to Papua New Guineans, and our people deserve transparency about why these appointments are being made. 🇵🇬
