@_homesbykonjanfit: Lewisville Lake. Denton County, Texas. 🌊 Before it was Lewisville Lake, it had another name. In the late 1940s, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers began building a massive new dam to supply water and control flooding for the growing Dallas area. 🏗️ The project was called the Garza-Little Elm Dam, and the lake it created was known as the Garza-Little Elm Reservoir. It wasn’t officially renamed Lewisville Lake until 1971. But the land under that water wasn’t empty. ⚰️ In the 1870s, Black families bought land near the town of Garza and established their own cemeteries. Jacob Cassady purchased the land for Cassady Cemetery in 1872, and Zack Rawlings and George Clark bought land for Clark Cemetery in 1876. When construction began in 1953, those graves had to be dug up and moved to a new site in Oak Point, next to the historically Black Harrington Cemetery. 🕯️ Today, the water covers the ground where those families first laid their loved ones to rest. The lake has its own painful history too. 💔 Lewisville Lake consistently ranks among the deadliest lakes in Texas, with 87 deaths over a 20-year span. In 2025 alone, there were seven water fatalities by the start of July. Many victims weren’t wearing life jackets. 🦺 Beneath the boats and beaches is a history worth remembering. 🌹 #fypツ #texashistory #lewisvilletx #dallastexas #hiddenhistory

I’ve lived next to the now Harrington, Cassady and Clark Cemetery for 30 years. Before there were neighborhoods out there my family and I use to help take care of it and we were so happy when they put up the marker and got a lawn crew to manage it on a regular basis. In the spring it’s blooming with tons of irises ❤️

How would they know that every grave was moved! It would not be a surprise that unmarked graves may have been left behind.
