I have to think it’s because they don’t see their parents apologize.

100% guilt and shame is an early barrier to this stuff. Most Kids aren’t as able to seperate their actions from their identity , they can see a failing in their choices or behaviour as a failing in themselves

as a person studying childhood development, i think it might be the fact rhat many adults just wont explain to them what it really means to apologize and they dont promote relfecting and understanding ones fault, children are just made to say words “im sorry” while not understanding and they feel such pressure that its natural to start defying that. on the other side, there might be kids that get blamed for everything and they dont understand that the fact that they did something wrong doesnt mean theyre bad kids and its natural, so thats where to guilt and fighting to stay acting like they havent done anything wrong (to protect themselves) comes from

Adults don’t say sorry to them when they make mistakes. They don’t have a framework of saying sorry

Because they see their parents do it and neither them nor their parents can use their words.

I think it’s because having to say sorry implies you did something wrong and children are taught to think in “this is right and good, this is wrong and bad” so maybe to them it feels like you’re saying they’re bad or the villain to someone else

A big part of it for me was that my parents always made me feel like apologizing automatically meant I was admitting I was wrong and that they had “won” the argument. So even if I was genuinely sorry for certain things (like the way I said something or the fact that I was being unnecessarily stubborn), my actual arguments or opinions would immediately be dismissed or ridiculed, because apologizing for how I handled things was treated as if I was admitting that my entire point was wrong 😭

As a peschool teacher: a lot of times their parents make them say sorry and hate them afterwards, the sorry the kids say does not work or heal anything, its just a word signifying your parent will hate you now for a while or that you will be punished ect. The “guilt” and “ego” is internalised fear of the reaction they’ve been trained to expect. If that isnt the case and sorry means something (being an actual accepted apology, a reconciliation) they do not struggle to say it at all.

When I make a mistake, I apologise to my kids and they do the same. if you want your kids to be respectful, you need to show your kids respect too. :)
