@the_elsewhere_index: The Neighbor Who Never Slept - Part #5 POSITION AVAILABLE. Night watchman. Hours: Sundown until sunrise. Compensation: None. Qualifications: Two functioning eyes, a reasonably comfortable chair, and a willingness to remain awake under circumstances that would strongly encourage any sensible person to do otherwise. Previous experience is not required. It will, unfortunately, be provided. Our story returns one final time to a quiet apartment courtyard, where an ordinary gentleman has recently made a most extraordinary discovery. He has encountered something that ought not to exist. Something that moves where no person could move. Something that has taken an interest in the residents of his building. And, most troubling of all, something that has now taken an interest in him. By sunrise, our gentleman will have acquired a rather different understanding of his former neighbor. That peculiar old man. The one everyone complained about. The one who sat in darkness, night after night, staring through his window. The one who never seemed to sleep. There is, as it happens, a very good reason why some people remain awake. And an equally good reason why others should be grateful that they do. But gratitude is a peculiar commodity. Most often appreciated only after the bill has come due. And tonight, someone must settle the account. The final chapter of The Elsewhere Index: THE NEIGHBOR WHO NEVER SLEPT — Part 5 of 5: The New Watcher An original horror story.
